Over one third of healthy bone is composed of collagen and 60% of cartilage is made of collagen type II. It can enhance the normal production of proteoglycans in the joint matrix, thereby maintain healthy joint structure. Fish hydrolysed collagen that is highly digestible due to its low molecular weight and accelerates absorption of dietary calcium.
Hyaluronic acid plays dual roles, it is an essential structural component of proteoglycans such as aggrecans in the cartilage matrix and serves to enhance viscoelastic structural and functional characteristics of the joint.
Glucosamine, an amino sugar, is the building block for cartilage. It has been shown to stimulate proteoglycan synthesis by human chondrocytes. Glucosamine supplement is absorbed rapidly from the intestines and transported to connective tissues. It helps the restoration of damaged joint tissues in osteoarthritis. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, independent of prostaglandin synthesis.
Chondroitin joins with protein to become proteoglycans. These proteoglycans comprise the ground substances in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue; cartilage. The significant increase in hyaluronic acid also occurs after taking oral chondroitin. Hyaluronic acid is a major component of synovial fluid which is the lubrication fluid in joints. It improves joint lubrication, reduces pain and improves mobility.
Dosage:
5-12 years – one capsule daily
13-18 years – one capsule two times daily
Adult – one capsule three times daily
Side effect:
It may cause allergic reactions in people with seafood allergies.
Caution:
Those with seafood allergies should use with caution in taking Arthrotec® supplement. Stop the drug if symptom of hypersensitivity occurs.
